This was a survey commissioned by the federal government with the primary focus on how hospitals are responding to a new, national effort to publicly report on the quality of care in U.S. hospitals. Just before the survey was fielded, some members of the federal government decided to use the survey to ask about the use of health information technology in hospitals. The survey was nationally representative with a high response rate. Unfortunately, the questions that were asked in the survey were not always very specific, thus making it difficult to ascertain just how many hospitals had an electronic health record or CPOE.
